A rack cabinet is a fundamental part of any IT infrastructure – an organised space for mounting servers, switches, UPSs, patch panels and network accessories. This category includes 19-inch rack cabinets and compact 10-inch models, designed for professional server rooms, office communications cabinets, LAN/WAN network distribution points, as well as CCTV and VoIP installations.

Types of rack cabinets – floor-standing, wall-mounted, open rack and 10-inch cabinets

The choice of rack cabinet depends on the number of devices, available space, cooling requirements and the level of physical security required.

Floor-standing rack cabinet – for server rooms and larger installations

A floor-standing rack cabinet is standard in professional server rooms and central network distribution points. Floor-standing cabinets are available in heights from 12U to 42U, providing space for dozens of devices in a single enclosure.

The most popular configurations include:

  • 42U 800 × 1000 rack cabinet – a solution for server rooms with full-size servers, disk arrays and rack-mounted UPSs. Cabinets in this class have high load-bearing capacity, often reaching several hundred kilograms or more than one thousand kilograms, depending on the model.
  • 600 × 800 and 600 × 1000 mm dimensions – popular options for medium-sized network and server installations, where a width of 600 mm is sufficient for mounting equipment, while a depth of 800–1000 mm leaves room for cabling behind the devices.
  • 800 × 1000 mm cabinets – used where extra space is needed for vertical cable managers, side-mounted PDU strips and wider equipment.

Floor-standing IT cabinets are usually equipped with adjustable mounting rails, removable side panels, front doors (glass or perforated) and cable entry points in the base and roof. For heavy equipment, the cabinet’s load capacity should be between 800 kg and 1500 kg.

Wall-mounted rack cabinet – for offices, small server rooms and network access points

A wall-mounted cabinet is the most common choice for a small office, technical room or network access point. Wall-mounted cabinets are available in heights from 4U to 27U, although they are typically between 9U and 12U – enough for basic network infrastructure comprising a router, switch, patch panel and, optionally, a recorder.

9U and 12U wall-mounted rack cabinets are the most common options, available in depths of 450 mm and 600 mm. Mounted on a wall, they take up minimal space and provide easy access to network equipment.

The range also includes two-section models (two-section rack cabinets), where the rear section tilts away from the wall, making it easier to access cabling and ports at the back of the devices.

Open rack frames – open rack for easy access and cooling

An open rack is an open 19-inch frame without an enclosed housing – it has no front doors, side panels or roof. These frames are installed in controlled environments, such as enclosed server rooms, testing laboratories or data centres with advanced air conditioning systems.

The main benefits of an open rack include:

  • Maximum airflow – the absence of an enclosed housing eliminates the risk of hot spots and allows air to flow freely around the equipment.
  • Easy access to cabling and equipment – servicing and reconfiguration do not require doors to be opened or panels to be removed.
  • Lower cost and simpler construction – fewer components mean a simpler design and faster installation.

However, an open rack requires a controlled room – without an enclosure, it is vulnerable to dust, contaminants and unauthorised access. In typical offices and small businesses, an enclosed rack cabinet is the safer choice.

10-inch rack cabinet – compact solutions for small installations

A 10-inch rack cabinet uses a smaller mounting standard and is designed for small devices: SOHO routers, basic switches, NVR recorders for CCTV systems and compact patch panels.

Remember that the 10-inch and 19-inch standards have different mounting rail widths – 10-inch devices cannot be mounted directly in a 19-inch cabinet. Special adapters and shelves are available to make this possible.

How to choose the right rack cabinet for your infrastructure

Choosing a rack cabinet is a decision that will affect the efficiency of your entire IT infrastructure for years to come. The criteria below can help you translate technical requirements into specific product parameters.

  • Purpose and type of equipment (servers, network, CCTV) – high-density server environments usually require a 42U 800 × 1000 rack cabinet with perforated doors and a high load capacity. Small network points can use a 9U or 12U wall-mounted rack cabinet with a depth of 450–600 mm.
  • Available space and mounting method – a server room with floor space is the natural setting for a floor-standing rack cabinet. A wall-mounted cabinet is suitable for a small office or technical room. In a laboratory where easy access and ventilation are priorities, consider an open rack.
  • Depth and load capacity relative to planned equipment – servers and large UPSs are usually housed in cabinets with a depth of 800–1000 mm, leaving several to tens of centimetres for cabling. Allow for future expansion when choosing the load capacity – a 2U server usually weighs 15–25 kg, a rack-mounted UPS 20–60 kg, and a disk array 20–40 kg.
  • Cooling and security requirements – perforated doors provide good airflow in server cabinets with high power density. For offices and areas accessible to users, locks on the doors and side panels are important (a lockable rack cabinet). Some sealed models have an increased IP rating.
  • Expansion and scalability plans – for modernisation projects or migrations to hybrid cloud solutions, choose a cabinet with at least 20–30% of its U space left free for additional devices, PDUs, backup modules and monitoring systems.

What does the U unit mean in a rack cabinet?

1U is 44.45 mm (1.75 inches) of mounting height – a universal unit used to specify how much space a device occupies in a 19-inch rack cabinet. A typical network switch takes up 1U, a rack server 1U or 2U, and a rack-mounted UPS 2U to 4U.

What depth rack cabinet should I choose for servers?

Cabinets with a depth of 800–1000 mm are most commonly used for servers and large UPSs. The cabinet depth should accommodate the deepest device – the body of a 1U/2U server is usually 700–900 mm, plus several centimetres for cabling at the rear and airflow.

What is the difference between a floor-standing and wall-mounted rack cabinet?

Does a rack cabinet require additional cooling?

It depends on the heat output of the equipment. For a few network switches and a router, natural ventilation through perforated panels may be sufficient. With multiple 1U/2U servers, an air-conditioned server room and/or fans mounted in the cabinet roof are usually essential.

Do 10-inch devices fit in a 19-inch cabinet?
