What is a PoE adapter and how does it work?

Power over Ethernet (PoE) is a technology that allows data and power to be transmitted over one cable. A PoE adapter has two ports: LAN (data input) and PoE/Data+Power (output with power and data). The benefits of using PoE adapters include:

  • Lower costs by eliminating separate power lines.
  • Simplification of infrastructure - one cable replaces two wires.
  • Centralisation of power and transmission management.
  • Scalability of the network without additional electrical work.

Types of PoE adapters

There are two basic types of adapters: splitters and injectors. The choice of adapter depends on the needs of the infrastructure.

PoE Injectors

A PoE injector adds power to the UTP cable when there is no PoE switch in the installation or a regular switch without this function is used. It can work with devices compliant with the 802.3af standard and allows powering a PoE camera from a traditional switch. PoE adapters power IP cameras, access points, IP phones, etc. An example is the TL-POE150S injector compliant with the IEEE 802.3af standard, which can also work with PoE cameras. PoE Splitters

  • IEEE 802.3af (PoE) – up to 15.4W (approx. 12.95W for the device).
