מתגי מיקרוטיק הם מתגים פונקציונאליים שכבה שלישית. הנהלה מתבצעת דרך מערכת RouterOS של החברה. אפשרות להתאמה מלאה ואלסטיות של המכשירים מאפשרת להשתמש בהם הן בחברות קטנות, והן בחברות גדולות.

למכשירים יש פונקציות מתקדמות ביותר, בין היתר אפשרות לבדיקת התדר, הגדרת VLAN, סינון לפי כתובות MAC, העברת פורטים (port-to-port forwarding) והכפלה של פורטים (mirror traffic). בנוסף, חלק מהמכשירים יכולים לקבל אספקת כוח באמצעות מכשירים ספקי כוח מסוג PoE (Power overt Ethernet).

המכשירים נבנו בצורה כזאת, אשר תקיים את הדרישות של קיבולת גבוהה וחוסר תקלות. דגש גדול יוחס לקונפיגורציה פשוטה ואפשרות להרחבה, אודות למה מדובר באפשרות מעולה לחברות ובתי עסק מתפתחים.
