External HDD Drives in Senetic's Offer

This guide is intended for those looking for a spacious and economical external HDD for storing business data.

In an era of increasing data volume and the need for secure backups, choosing the right storage medium becomes crucial. Discover the advantages of external HDD drives, their specifications, and applications dedicated to business.

What is an external HDD?

An external HDD is a hard disk drive with spinning magnetic platters that store data using precise read/write heads. Unlike internal drives, external HDDs have a casing with a USB port, providing mobility and easy installation without the need to open the computer. This allows the external hard drive to facilitate easy storage and transfer of data between different devices.

HDDs are commonly used for creating backups (e.g., entire systems, specific folders), ensuring protection against data loss. Moreover, portable HDDs can be used to transfer large files and archive data in a secure and convenient manner. Additionally, an HDD can be easily connected to various devices, enhancing their versatility and functionality.

Basic Technical Parameters of HDDs

Disk Capacity

External HDDs are available in various capacities, from 1 TB to even 20 TB, allowing for the storage of large data sets. The choice of the appropriate capacity for an external drive should be tailored to actual needs with an additional buffer for future years of use.

1 TB external drives are sufficient for storing, for example, documents.
2 TB external drives are a universal solution that can accommodate, for example, an entire archive of photos and graphic projects.
Drives with a capacity of 4 TB and above are recommended for professionals working with large files.
Models with capacities of 8 TB, 12 TB, 16 TB, and even 20 TB offer enormous space, ideal for archiving large data sets and demanding business applications.

Format

There are two types of external HDD formats, 2.5" and 3.5".

2.5" is a portable hard drive, lightweight and powered directly from the USB port.
3.5" is a stationary HDD that requires an external power supply, usually offering higher capacity and performance.

Interface

There are several options to choose from, including: USB 3.0, USB 3.1 Gen 1, USB 3.2 Gen 2. The type of interface is crucial for data transfer speed and compatibility with various devices.

Rotational Speed

The most popular speeds expressed in RPM (i.e., how many revolutions the device makes per minute) are 5400 RPM (quieter and more energy-efficient) and 7200 RPM (higher performance and faster data writing).

In what applications is HDD effective?

When choosing an HDD, it is best to match its type and capacity to the actual needs and type of data you intend to store on it. External HDDs are a practical solution, proving effective in various applications:

Archiving Business Data

Secure storage of documents, reports, contracts, and backups of systems and important folders.

Storing and Managing Multimedia

Handling libraries of high-definition films, recordings from cameras.

Transporting and Sharing Data

Transferring large files, sharing resources.

Support for Servers and Backup Systems

HDDs can serve as external storage for archiving data from servers, providing an additional layer of security and facilitating data recovery in case of failure.

Logistical and Mobile Applications

Storing and transporting important files in the field, e.g., in transport or service companies.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Why is an external HDD a budget option?

HDDs offer the lowest cost per GB of storage compared to SSDs, making them an ideal choice for data backup or archiving. HDDs are designed for storing data without the need for internet access, eliminating costs associated with cloud storage.

Does an HDD have options to secure data?

Some models of external HDDs offer advanced security options, including hardware data encryption using AES with 256-bit strength. This is one of the most effective and commonly used methods for protecting information stored on drives. Many models feature reinforced casings that are resistant to water and dust, thus protecting the drives from mechanical damage even in harsh working conditions.

How long will an HDD last?

With daily use, 3-5 years; with less frequent use, significantly longer, even up to 10 years. To ensure that an external HDD serves reliably for as long as possible, one must consider its construction and transport carefully, the intensity of use, overheating, and power supply (specifically voltage drops).

Is an external HDD or SSD better?

HDDs use magnetic technology with moving parts, offering read and write speeds ranging from 80-160 MB/s and capacities of up to 20 TB. They are mainly used for storing large amounts of data at an affordable price. In contrast, external SSDs are based on flash memory, making them more resistant to mechanical damage and offering significantly higher data transfer speeds, exceeding 500 MB/s. SSDs are portable solutions recommended for those needing speed, mobility, and data security during frequent travels.

In summary, the choice between an HDD and an SSD should depend on the individual needs of the user and the type of device with which the drive will be used.

What are the best external HDDs? Which brands are recommended?

The most commonly recommended brands offering external HDDs are Western Digital, Seagate, ADATA, and Toshiba. When choosing an external HDD, it is worth paying attention to the quality of construction and parameters such as disk capacity, interface speed, or format. Western Digital and Seagate are market leaders, offering a wide selection of models with various capacities and applications - from portable 2.5" USB-powered drives to large-capacity stationary 3.5" external HDDs. ADATA and Toshiba also provide solid and reliable external drives that are suitable for business applications.

We encourage you to check out Senetic's offer, where you will find the selected external HDD tailored to your requirements, with a guarantee of quality and technical support. We also encourage you to register on the Senetic B2B Portal dedicated to resellers.
